Shropshire Skills Trust - Crafting the future, from the past.

The partnership led by the Shropshire Skills Trust represents a powerful and enduring model of international collaboration rooted in heritage, education and sustainable rural development. Bringing together craftspeople and building professionals from Shropshire and Herefordshire with communities in Transylvania, the Trust has spent more than three decades delivering practical conservation training that benefits participants in both the UK and Romania.

Led by experienced conservation specialists Colin Richards, Joe Richards, Dan Richards, Tom Holder and Darren Griffiths, the programme centres on the preservation and teaching of traditional building crafts. These include stone masonry, lime rendering, timber framing, brick and tile making, lime burning and blacksmithing — skills that are fundamental to the repair and stewardship of historic and vernacular buildings.

Training is delivered through hands-on restoration projects within local villages, ensuring that learning is practical, relevant and sustainable. By working directly on traditional buildings and landscapes, participants gain meaningful experience while safeguarding architectural heritage. This approach not only preserves craft knowledge but also reinforces the cultural identity embedded within rural environments.

Tutors involved with the Trust are selected for their exceptional craft expertise, teaching ability and strong communication skills, alongside personal qualities that reflect the organisation’s ethos. Central to this ethos is community empowerment through skills development — enabling individuals to support themselves and contribute positively to their local economies.

A distinctive feature of the programme is the collaboration between UK construction students and young people from host villages in Transylvania. This shared learning environment fosters cultural exchange, mutual respect and personal growth. For many participants, the experience proves transformative, broadening horizons while strengthening practical competence and confidence.

The Trust’s overriding objective is to ensure that traditional construction skills continue to thrive in the 21st century. By helping rural communities adapt to modern economic realities without sacrificing cultural heritage, the programme supports long-term sustainability. A key element of this work is enabling skilled craftspeople in both the UK and Transylvania to remain within their home regions, earning sustainable livelihoods through the careful stewardship of historic buildings and landscapes.

The Shropshire Skills Trust is currently applying to become an independent, stand-alone registered charity. Having worked in close partnership with the Ludlow Town Walls Trust for many years, the Trust wishes to formally record its sincere gratitude to all past and present members for their continued support and encouragement. This longstanding relationship has been instrumental in enabling the programme to grow and flourish.

While moving to manage its own accounts and charitable objectives, the Shropshire Skills Trust will continue to work very closely with the Ludlow Town Walls Trust, maintaining the strong collaborative partnership that has underpinned its success to date.

Through education, heritage conservation, skills development and rural regeneration, the Shropshire Skills Trust delivers clear and lasting public benefit — demonstrating how traditional craft skills can remain both culturally significant and economically viable in the modern world.
